As South Africa’s premier inland tourism and leisure destination, the Kruger Lowveld region includes world-renowned attractions such as the Kruger National Park and surrounding private game reserves, God’s Window, the Blyde River Canyon and Barberton Makhonjwa Geotrail and Genesis Route, as well popular tourist towns such as Sabie, Graskop, Pilgrim’s Rest, Hazyview, White River, Nelspruit, Kaapschehoop and Malalane.
Few parts of the world can match Kruger Lowveld for its natural and cultural diversity or for the genuine warmth of the welcome given to each and every visitor to the region. Explore the map below to find out why the Kruger Lowveld is called "South Africa's premier inland tourism destination".
The largest game reserve in South Africa, the Kruger National Park is larger than Israel. Nearly 2 million hectares of land that stretch for 352 kilometres (20 000 square kilometres) from north to south along the Mozambique border is given over to an almost indescribable wildlife experience. Certainly it ranks with the best in Africa and is the flagship of the country’s national parks.
Boasting an exceptional diversity of game, it is home to more different species of wildlife than any other natural sanctuary in Africa. Visitors can set out in search of the Big Five in their own cars or on guided game drives. Gecko Lodge is only 16.5km's from the Phabeni Gate.
One of the country's most scenic self-drives, the Panorama Route, explores the Mpumalanga highlands, or the north-eastern section of the Great Escarpment of the Drakensberg. In these rugged mountains the plateau comes to an abrupt and dramatic halt, falling steeply away into the Lowveld accompanied by incredible views out over the grasslands of Africa.
The most popular stretch of the route is the R532 that winds its way from the town of Sabie to Graskop which the goes to God's Window, Pinnacle Rock, the Blyde River Canyon, Bourke's Luck Potholes and the three Rondawels.
Mpumalanga boasts some of South Africa's most breathtaking waterfalls.
Berlin Falls: Witness the power of nature at Berlin Falls, a cascading wonder near God's Window. A viewing platform offers a spectacular view of the Watervalspruit River plunging 80 meters into a verdant pool.
Lone Creek Falls: Just 10 minutes from Sabie, this 68-meter waterfall boasts a serene setting with indigenous forest, picnic areas, a sandy beach, and a refreshing pool. The surrounding indigenous forest adds to its national monument status.
Lisbon Falls: Cascading 94 meters, it's one of Mpumalanga's highest waterfalls. Explore this easily accessible wonder just outside the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. Conveniently located north of Graskop and 40 minutes from Hazyview.
Bridal Veil Falls: Unlike its powerful neighbours, this waterfall cascades gently like a bride's veil, offering a refreshing spray and a unique perspective from behind the falls via a scenic, yet slippery, pathway.
